A Story of Soap & the Atlantic Ocean
All year round we go to Port Hillford beach on the pristine Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia to collect sea water in five-gallon buckets. We've learned that crocs are the best thing to wear, as rubber boots simply fill up with water 😊
Once the water is filtred through fine fabric it then makes up 25% of every bar! Why? Salt water makes a harder bar so it lasts longer, salt water is soothing to skin, & most especially it's kind of romantic to use something that connects us to our ancestors who emigrated from the old country 10 generations ago.
Read on below to learn of the wide variety of bars we then go on to make with soothing botanicals & rich essential oils . . . something to suit every preference, which makes our hearts happy

Pack Options
- Full bar: appx 100 grams* (cured)
- Mini bar: appx 20 grams* (cured)
- Bulk brick: appx 2 kilograms (made fresh to order)
During the curing process water evaporates & weight decreases, though shape remains the same. Fully cured bars are harder, so last longer, provided they are allowed to dry between uses.
Packaging Info
- Full bar & mini bar - Recyclable, compostable, zero-waste, plastic-free box
- Bulk brick - Recyclable, zero-waste, plastic-free paper wrap
How to Process Bulk Bricks
Cut to Desired Sizes & Shapes
- Using a non-serrated cutting edge (knife, pastry scraper, etc.) carefully cut the bricks into whatever size or shape you wish.
- You can mold chunks of the brick like playdough, if you wish, to make a ball-shaped bar, too 😊
- Alternatively, you can soften some of the brick and roll it out, then cut into shapes with cookie cutters. Note: you may find it easier to roll out between sheets of parchment or silicone.
Cure
- Place the bars on trays lined with a mesh or rack (for airflow), ensuring you leave a bit of air space on all sides.
- Place the trays in a warm, dry place away from direct sunlight & heat.
- Allow 3-4 weeks minimum for the bars to dehydrate, which will make them harder so they last longer.
How to Use Soap Bars
Instructions ~ Use as a Bar
- Wet bar & lather up on hands, face & body
- Rinse well
- Store bar out of water to dry between uses
Tip: Place the bar on the bristles of a fingernail brush so the water drains off it.
Instructions ~ Use as Foaming Soap
- Purchase a foaming soap bottle with a pump
- Cut several slivers of a bar and place in the bottle
- Fill the bottle with warm water & shake well
- The soap will soften in the water
- When you pump the bottle foaming soap will come out 😊
Tip: This is a great way to use up tiny slivers of soap when you get to the end of a bar.
Instructions ~ Use by Folks with Manual Dexterity Issues
- Purchase a mesh soap bag
- Place soap in the mesh bag so texture makes soap easier to hold
- Wrap the bag’s string on wrist to prevent dropping if grip is lost
- Lather up outside of bag then rub on area to be cleansed
- Rinse well
- Hang on hook so it dries between uses
Tip: The mesh bag is also a great way to use up slivers of soap that are too small to hold.
Instructions ~ Use for Bathing in Nature
- Purchase a mesh soap bag
- Place soap in the mesh bag
- Wrap string on wrist so it won’t sink in water
- Lather up bag & rub on area to be cleansed
- Rinse well
- Hang on hook or branch to dry between uses
How to Get the Best Value
- Allow bars to dry between uses to last longest
- Cut larger bars to use at multiple sinks or later
- Store spares in dry spot out of direct heat
- Do not store in airtight containers or plastic
- Wrap wet bar in dry cloth when travelling
